Contraction Surgery

Our topic this term is "When I grow up, I want to be...."

Today we tried being surgeons. We were operating on words.

We had to make sure we had the right tools: gloves, mask and scissors.

We were given a piece of paper with two words on it. We had to find the contraction that matched.

We looked at the two pieces of paper to find which letters were missing in our contraction.
We made a cut to take out the letters that are supposed to be missing.

Then we stuck the words back together with a plaster. The plaster shows the place of the apostrophe.

We put our finished contractions on the wall.

The Big Shake Out

Last week we participated in the New Zealand Shake Out. The Shake Out was a nationwide earthquake drill.

We read stories about earthquakes.
"Quaky Cat" is the story of Tiger, a cat who runs away and gets lost during the first Christchurch earthquake. We talked about how we would feel during an earthquake.

We also read Ana's Earthquake story.

The story taught us what to do during an earthquake.

We learnt to:
Drop
Drop to the ground and crawl on your hands and knees.

Cover
We cover ourselves under a solid table and curl ourselves into a turtle shape.
Hold
We hold on tight to the table so it doesn't move away with us.
