Variety Show Performance

We are Stars!!!

We have been working hard all term making props and learning our song for the Variety Show.

Did you know that we made our planets? .

On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, we performed our Solar System Song to a huge audience. Some of us were very nervous.

We knew our words. We remembered to smile and we looked at our audience.

Mrs MacBeth is very proud of how hard we worked and how well we did.

If you missed our amazing performances, here is a video of one of our practices.

Well done Room 9!!!!!

Welcome Miss S

My name is Kasia Szparagowska. I am 20 years old and I am in my first year of study at AUT to become a teacher. This is my second placement in Room 9. I will be here until the end of term.

We have some exciting upcoming events like the Variety Show and Book week as well as working on a variety of art work.

I am enjoying my time with Room 9 as they are a wonderful class.

Reading in Room 9 and 10

At reading time we work together with room 10.
We share a big book and our weekly poem in Room 10 to start our reading time.

Then we split into the two classes. Right now, the Ants, the Butterflies, the Ladybugs and the Bees work in Room 10 with Mrs MacBeth. The Dragonflies, the Grasshoppers, the Snails and the Spiders work in room 10 with Mrs Buchanan.

Here are some of the things we do to help us with our reading.

"Read to Self"
This is quiet practice of our reading book and other stories.

"Listen to Reading"
We listen to stories being read to us.

"Word Work"
We play games and do activities to help us read and write high frequency words.

When we are stuck on a word we are learning to:

  • Say the sounds in a word
  • Read on or back
  • Use the picture for clues
  • Look for words within words

We are also learning to retell the story.

Solar System Collage Project

We are learning about Space this term.

We have started creating large planets and the sun as a way of sharing our learning. Have a look at the beginning of our sun. Georgia shares their task.

We would love any spare coloured paper you may have to add to our collages.

Winter Landscapes

Our first week back at school and we have been talking about winter. We thought of amazing winter words to use in our writing and we have done some Winter Landscapes to illustrate our writing.

We used white crayon on light yellow paper and drew a landscape scene with hills, trees and clouds.

Next we covered our picture with dye. We started with a zigzag of purple.

Then we covered the whole page with blue dye. It mixed with the purple and made it look like a chilly winter's day.

We turned our picture over a ndwiped the back of it to get off the excess dye. We are putting our winter landscapes with our winter writing. We are very proud of our work.

Todd, Jayden and Cameron even got to share their writing with Mrs Sandifer. They did a great job of thinking about their next word and writing the first letter! Great writing boys.

Matariki Stars

Today was the start of Matariki, the Maori New Year. We listened to the story of Matariki and then made some salt painted stars.

First we drew about the star stencil with chalk.

We squeezed PVA glue over our chalk lines and covered the glue with salt. We tipped off the salt that didn't stick,

In our Fine Motor session with Mrs Buchanan, we had been colouring and cutting stars. We added these to our picture.

Next we used water colour paints and salt to colour our stars. We had to use heaps of water and the salt sucked up the watery paint. We love watching it spread.

Our finished stars look amazing!
